Salvaging in Longwall Mining means shifting of Longwall equipments ( Supports, Cutting machine and other ancillaries ) from one panel where coal extraction has been completed to new panel from where coal will be extracted. Longwall equipments being heavy in nature, it requires deployment of highly skilled manpower with extreme safety measures as area under exposure is very big. Some of the safety measures deployed during salvaging are wire meshing with roof bolting of the exposed faces roof, use of specially designed trollies ( called GMT ) apart from removal of face supports by placing it in a way that ensures completely supported chamber for workmen working in the face.
