Mine rescue crews are searching for two contractors at FNI's Lockerby Mine
after a reported ground collapse this morning.
The company issued a release saying the company "reports that an accident
has occurred at its underground operations at the Lockerby Mine near
Sudbury, Ontario. Mine rescue operations are underway to locate and assess
the condition of two contractors. All other workers have reported in
safely."
"All underground activities except emergency requirements were suspended
immediately upon knowledge of the accident.
"FNI will continue to update the situation as more information becomes
available."
One man who said he works at the mine told the Star he saw a mine rescue
team at the site shortly after 6 a.m., and workers were turned away at the
gates this morning. He told the Star the incident was a collapse of ground.
Anne Marie MacInnis, president of Mine Mill Local 598/Unifor, told reporter
Carol Mulligan the union's workers are not involved in the incident.
