Just to elaborate furtjher the definition provided by Prof. Muthereja

Open cast mining , in Indian context is mainly restricted to coal, wherein the OB is directly cast / hauled into adjacent mined out panels. eg. as in dragline benches

Opencast: when casting back the OB in worked out area
Open pit: when OB is dumped in external dumps and create a pit
