Due to shrinkage factor. When paper/plan will shrink, the drawn scale accordingly shrink and you can calculate the shrinkage factor. Accordingly you can apply the shrinkage correction to the measured plan length.
Suppose,
grid value was 10cm at the time of preparation of plan
After 10 yeras, grid value= 9.7cm
Shrinkage factor=10-9.7 = -3mm/100=0.003(-), hence correction=Positive.
This occurs generally with tracing paper/cloth.
To avoid shrinkage, use Polyster film of 25 micro mm (as Adviced by DGMS)
