One person was killed and three wounded when a mine near Chile's northern
coast caved in, the company that owns the site said Wednesday.

Earth and rocks collapsed into the mine Tuesday afternoon, killing Victor
Oblitas Miranda, who "worked as a shift manager on site," said a statement
from the company Rojas y Blanco, owner of the mine near the northern coastal
town of Mejillones.

Another three workers escaped with injuries, and were taken to the hospital
in Antofagasta, some 1,370 kilometers (850 miles) north of Santiago.

"Operations at the mine are suspended" and investigators were on site
looking into the "serious accident," said Antofagasta labor secretary Pablo
Rojas.

Last year, 24 workers were killed in mining accidents in Chile, the world's
largest copper producer.

Two years ago, Chile was also the site of the largest mine rescue effort in
the world, when 33 workers were pulled free after spending 69 days buried
around 700 meters (2,290 feet) underground in the Atacama desert.
