W. Va. man killed in mining accident in Greene County, PA

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

January 17, 2016

A Danville, W. Va., man was fatally injured Saturday evening in a mining accident located near Mount Morris in Greene County.

The mine is owned by Mepco of Morgantown, W.Va.

A statement from Brian M. Osborn, senior vice president of operations, identified the victim as Jeremy R. Neice, 31.

"We at the company are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague. During this very difficult time, we extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Jeremy's family, to all our employees, and to all who knew Jeremy,'' Mr. Osborn said.

The accident happened at about 6 p.m. at what was identified as 4 West Mine, which is described as being located near Mount Morris, Greene County, according to an emergency dispatch services supervisor for Greene County.

Operations at the mine have been suspended, according to Mr. Osborn.

Federal and state mine safety agencies have been notified, he said, and "the company is fully cooperating in the investigation into the circumstances that led to this accident."

Mr. Osborn issued his comments in a written statement. He could not be reached for additional comment.

In July, the state Department of Environmental Protection cited Mepco for another miner's death at the same mine.

On June 28, 2015, John W. Kelly, 55, of Albright, W.Va., was moving a set of airlock doors when the doors and their frames fell and crushed him. Mr. Kelly had worked at the mine for about 10 years and was using a diesel scoop to haul supplies when he was killed, according to information that was provided at the time of the accident.
