As the CMR were framed in the year 1957, keeping in view the then, conventional mining tech.(Drilling & Blasting), the width of galleries were restricted to Max. 4.8m corresponding to the depth of seam under Reg.99(4).
However, with the advent of the Room & Pillar mining Technology, with deployment of Continuous miners in conjuction with Diesel Ram Cars/ shuttle cars , the galleries are essentially required to be widened to 5- 6M to facilitate the negotiation of the equipment between pillars while mining ( Development/Depillaring of pillars).
In Room & Pillar method, size of the pillars so formed were scientifically investigated, to calculate the Load on pillars & Pillars strenght , using the Geo-Technical data of the site & depth.
From the above, FoS of pillars was known to ensure that pillars will, with stand the load/pressures, during the course of mining while Depillaring till the completion of panel .
Based on the Sceintific Site Study Report, done by any reputed Sceintific agency specialized in Rock Engineering,the DGMS will grant special permission to widen the galleries beyond 4.8M, imposing certain conditions to secure Roof & Sides with Resin Bolting, for the safety of Men & Machinery.
