The Australian
December 9, 2013

Two miners died when they fell 35m down a shaft in Tasmania on Monday.

The remote community of Queenstown was in mourning after the "family men"
died at the Mt Lyell copper mine .

The maintenance workers, Craig Gleeson, 45, and Alistair Lucas, 25, were
working almost 1km underground in the mine's No.1 shaft when they fell from
a platform.

Police Inspector Matthew Richman said it was believed they were working on
level 18 at about 9am when the accident happened.

He said the men both lived in Queenstown and had families in the town:
"Certainly it is a big impact, any loss of life is significant. Loss of life

among a tight knit mining organisation is even more significant. ''

Copper Mines of Tasmania, which owns and operates the mine, stopped all work
at the site on Monday.

CMT general manager Scot Clyde said it was an extremely regrettable
incident.

"Our deepest sympathies are with the families of the two workers, their
immediate workmates and also our other site employees, who will be saddened
by this tragic accident,' ' Mr Clyde
