Serious Injury Accident
Underground Crushed & Broken Limestone - April, 2015 – Three miners were waiting for the mine foreman to conduct an examination of the mine. They were standing near the main portal when a massive fall of ground occurred partially collapsing the workings inside. The air blast exiting the portal knocked them to the ground resulting in multiple injuries to each miner.
Best Practices
• Conduct examinations of the highwall before, during and after every rain, freeze, or thaw.
• Properly size and maintain pillars to maintain an effective ground control plan.
• Be aware of geological features in the area.
• Constantly observe and test the roof for adverse conditions.
• Always make a visual examination of the area.
• If hazardous conditions are observed, take appropriate action.
